help please.

i have this cold and it seriously won't go away. it started in germany, and it's still here, even worse than ever. i don't go to bed late. i drink herbal tea. i blow my nose every chance i get in order to get rid of all the YUCK. i have a horrible cough. my head is congested. i take nyquil at night sometimes because my coughing and stuffy nose keeps me awake. my throat is sore--even ricola mixed berry with vitamin C drops aren't helping. i drink airborne (jake puts it in hot water for me, like a tea). i mean i am doing everything i know how to do that is safe for baby. i'm at a breaking point. seriously.
help.

I had a dr tell me once to take mucinex dx (spelling?). It did wonders for my stuffed up head when it seemed like nothing else was working. and lemon and honey in the tea is my favorite for a sore throat. sorry you're sick :( hope you feel better soon!

sorry girly! Funny thing, when I was pregnant I got sicker than ever when I was NOT pregs (with normal stuff, like colds). Strange. I always did warmer water with honey. Didn't help the actual illness, but helped me "feel" better.

Hang in there.

Sorry to read that you're sick. If you've had long-lasting cold symptoms without seeing any improvement, you may have a sinus infection. As I'm sure you are aware, sinus infections can be brought on by the change cabin in pressure during flights. If this is the case, you'll likely need an antibiotic such as Augmentin. You might consider trying a cold medication that also offers some relief for sinus irritation such as Tylenol Cold & Sinus (they sell a day, night and day/night version).

Your throat could be sore due to the irritation caused by the drainage from your sinuses in addition to your coughing. I have found that a low dose of Advil can help relieve the swelling of a sore throat.

If you're having issues with phlegm (gross, I know) while coughing, you should be sure to look for a cold medication that includes guaifenesin, which is an expectorant.

Good luck, and feel better soon.

Jenna - I must agree with the anonymous person. When I was preggo I was sick and SURE I had a cold that just wouldn't go away. I finally went to the Dr and she said I had a sinus infection, though I felt no pressure in my sinuses like I'd felt previously when I had one. I was sure she was wrong, but I took the antibiotics she prescribed anyway and problem solved. It's worth a try. Good luck:)

I would ask your doctor. Most medications, including Nyquil are not approved for use during pregnancy.

during the summer, i was seeing a high-risk specialist for my pregnancy because of my history with miscarriages. i told him about my europe trip and asked if there were any medications that i could take to help me sleep on the plane. he suggested either nyquil or tylenol PM... so i think i'm okay taking nyquil every once in awhile. i have an appointment on monday, so i will ask then. thank you for all the suggestions!

Buy a powdered vitamin c, and overdose on it. Mix about 1000 mg vit.c in a glass of water, drink every 15 min. or so. You will get the runs, but you will also flush out your lymphs. Works like a dream for me. Also good because excess vit. c gets peed out, so it won't overrun your liver and kidneys like od'ing on other vitamins will. Did this under my pregnancies too.

hi jenna-
if you wanna try an herbal approach, this company in Boulder makes THE BEST remedies for pregnant ladies:

Try the "Cold Remedy PREG"...it works wonders. Also, (just throwin' this out there) 2 months before my due date I started taking their "Late Pregnancy Preparatory Tonic" & my labors with both boys were under 5 hours. I'm not saying the herbal thing was entirely the reason why, but it's worth a shot! They also have a bunch of other cool things on there...just explore the website! (Geez- I sound like a spokesperson for them!)
Good luck. Hope you feel better. Good thing you have an awesome husband to take care of you! :)

Jenna,

I just got over the same thing - hideous sore throat that hung on for 10 days, even with taking an antibiotic. It must have been viral because the antibiotic didn't touch it. I was doing everything I could think of - just like you - and what finally made the difference was (and you're going to laugh) SNUFFLING! In case you've forgotten, put 1 tsp slt in 1 quart warm water, add a pinch of baking soda. Plug one site of your nose, pour a puddle of the salt solution into the cup of your hand, and snuffle (snort!)the water up into your sinus cavities. Do it several times in each nostril, blowing your nose after each inhaling. It sounds gross, but it worked. My friend had constant sinus infection for years, and her specialist was leaning toward some pretty nasty surgery. Her physicians assistant recommended the snuffling. It cleared it right up, no surgery. She still does it several times a week on a preventive basis, and hasn't had a sinus infection since. So, my dear, send Jake into the other way to spare him the nasty sound affects and snuffle away. Can't possibly hurt baby.
PS - Be sure the water is lukewarm when you snuffle it - cold water hurts. Good luck!

Cayenne pepper tea works great for us around here. Just add a pinch of pepper to your lemon and honey tea. It helps the sore throat and helps clear up the sinuses. Also, YOGA! Of course only things you've already been doing. I just got over a cold just like yours...you can do it :)

Ginger and tomato soup works wonders for congestion. I found out about it from a co-worker who is from China. The easiest way to do it is to mix a can of crushed tomato with some chicken stock, add grated ginger (2-3 Tbsp) and bring it all to a simmer for a few minutes before you eat it. Fantastic.
