smells.

my house doesn't ever smell bad. but i also don't think it ever smells fabulous. it's just normal. i feel like i've tried quite a few different things to freshen up the living space, but i don't have a favorite. i used to use oil and and oil burner, which worked really well when we were living in a smaller space. but now that things are a little more open, i feel like the smell just doesn't make it around everywhere like i'd want it to. i have a scentsy warmer that i really like, but i feel like i have the same problem with that as i do with the oil. maybe i just need some new wax to burn in it? candles never go very far, i feel like. anyway, i'm curious to know what you use and what has worked best for you. let me know.

Personally, I use Salt City Candles. That could likely be, because I sell them. Most oil diffusers don't work too well, I do like those wall flower things from Bath & Body but you have to buy a new one every two weeks. The Scentsy pots are ok, I'm not a fan of their fragrances, and they don't last too long so you have to change the wax every two weeks. Salt City sells the same sort of thing. Their basic candles though, are amazing ALWAYS super fragrant. You just have to treat your candle with great care and it will do the same for you! I feel like I'm doing a sales pitch, but Salt City Candle really is the BEST candles you could buy. TEN TIMES better then Yankee or Gold Canyon. Just sayin' :D

I don't scent my house, per se, but I add essential oils to a lot of things that make my house smell!

I have a few cotton balls with cedar oil in my laundry hamper and closet, to keep moths and other wool munching things away.

I add 5 drops of tea tree oil to the soap with every load of laundry, because I wash cold (to save electricity and the envoronment). It kills germs. I add 10 drops of lavender oil to mask the tea tree, so my laundry always smells so good! It must be said that I use perfume free detergent, and hang dry everything.

Every two weeks or so, I burn an incense stick in the bathroom, and then air the house out really well afterwards. Nice way to start afresh.

These things do add a hint of the health food store to my house, but I like it. It smells fresh and natural at all times.

okay i've been quite the commenter on your blog lately. so many topics of interest. loving it.

i use the anthropologie volcano candle. and while it may seem like a rip off at 28 dollars it fills your whole house with a yummy, clean scent and lasts FOREVER. light it though, don't use a candle warmer. i swear it smells better, plus the flame just looks fab.

I am also going through this dilemma. I used to use oil burners but found it was almost too strong. I have really been into to the more "fresh" smells. We got this powder stuff you sprinkle over the carpet before you vacuum and it diffuses into the air! I've loved it so far. I've also gotten into the habit of spraying febreze onto all the curtains in the house.
And I light candles every evening.

We're Scentsy users in my house. I found that Walmart also carries a scentsy-knock off brand that works the same way-for half the price. I have a warmer upstairs and one downstairs, and since I've started using them, my house always smells good. you can also buy those timer-switches, so that you can time how often the burner turns on or off so it's not going all the time.

so the wick on my volcano totally disappeared. i really can not get it to light and there is still a good amount of candle left. so we've been boiling it! and suprisingly it is working fabulously. and the great thing is it never goes down! it stays the same amount. of course the volcano is perfect for the size of my apartment though. ?? good post though. i'm always wondering what really does work best. especially since i haven't tried the scentsy, however i do think that scent ports and wallflowers suck. those don't even smell up our tiny apartment.

are we gonna be playing this weekend???

OHH I LOVE scentsy, like love it. I have a warmer in various parts of my house (every bathroom as a plug in warmer) so that gets a little tedious to empty and refill every few days BUT my house smells good. ALSO the bath and body room sprays are yummy but they only last a few hours--so I always spray my entire house with them before guest come over. Cute Katie had a volcano candle from anthro and I swear the whole house smelled AMAZING. I've been meaning to go get me one of those, because they smell just delightful and they are STRONG!

* you are all so very nice. i have about 4 anthropolgie candles already, including 2 volcanos. i've had them since my sophomore year of college and have also sworn by them. i'm just in the mood for something new, ya know?

Hi Jenna- this is Elle, commenting anonymously this time, silly me has forgotten the password to my account!

Anyway, have you tried incense sticks? I ADORE them! So many yummy scents and they give off a wondeful smoky, home-y scent as they burn. My favorites are cinnammon and jasmine. You can buy whole batches rather inexpensively, and light one in every room (or just a few). On a side note, do a little googling before you buy as I know some essential oils and such aren't safe to inhale during pregnancy.

Love and goodluck!

Forgot to say, that I always have cottonballs with drops of lavender oil in my vaccuum cleaner bag. So every time I vaccuum (which is often) the most heavenly scent permeates the air. It's antibaterial as well!

Just for fun - read the labels of all those scent thingies around. How much of it can you pronounce? How much of what you can't pronounce do you really want in the air, in your face (not to mention the baby's)? Just a thought. Go natural. Even natural oils can cause allergies, not to mention the chemical ones, so tread carefully in the world of home scents.

I'm not afraid of chemicals, so I'll have to second the scentsy ideas. Walmart here has knockoff warmers for $15 and bars for $2. I think they work really well. I have a few around the house! The gingerbread scent? amazing.

I really like the Wallflowers from Bath and Body Works. I have one in every room! If you buy them when they are on sale (which is often) then they are too bad!
